If I could only have one pet I'd probably go with a cat. I overall like cats more, and they're just cute. ^_^
However... I do luffs my Buster a great deal. He'd be hard to let go of. Hell I'm still angsting the day I'll leave the house and probably leave him with my dad. >_>;
Dogs are great loyal pets, and adorable at that. I think I'd perfer them over cats, even though cats are so much easier to deal with (they don't require too much attention), dogs will come to you and be there always, not just when they feel like it...plus, I don't like the idea of cats being outside (unless they're a tabby cat or something that knows how to keep out of trouble...if my cat got outside, guaranteed she'd be killed by another cat, hit by a car, or chased by dogs), while dogs are more sturdy as outdoor pets. That's a bonus for dogs...but then you've got to have the space, lol.
In the end it's an "all depends" kind of thing. When I go off to college I have to leave both my dog and my cat behind...so that stinks...

In most instances, a dog. I tend to like dogs better and find them a lot more "enjoyable" as there's more you can do with them. I tend to like animals with some sort of strong herd or pack instinct (dogs, horses, etc.) better than more "independent" animals like cats. I love my cats and all though, I just prefer dogs. I mean, c'mon, what's better than 90lbs of floppy labrador lying up on you and nearly squishing you while snoring?
THOUGH if I were living by myself and had a small income as well as having to work a lot I would likely go with a cat instead (maybe...) since it would likely be easier.
Dog, definately. For whatever reason, cats don't like me. And quite frankly, I don't like them. I have never met a dog that has ever even growled at me. But all cats just hate to be around me. >.> Therefore, I keep my distance with them. I like lovable animals anyway. Not independent ones that only come to you for food.
Dogs are always fun like that. In particular, I have a very unique cat I suppose. She's independent and has an attitude, but is a sweetheart. Srsly, whenever I cry the cat comes next to me meowing like, "omg mommy what's wrong? D:"
Maybe not. Until then, I'll just keep my current judgment (even though that's really shallow, ignorant, and unlike me xD), until I meet a cat that doesn't want to rip off my face. C:
